The KIPENI ESTATE
An Oasis of Calm in a Chaotic World
Welcome to the Ķipēni Estate
In a world where so many of us are rushing without a break, Ķipēni Estate is an oasis of calm.
Step off the treadmill for a break and enjoy a warm welcome at Ķipēni. Relax in the middle of the beautiful Latvian countryside.
Ķipēnu Muiža is located in Vidzeme, in the countryside near Limbazi. It is situated in its own Estate of around 9 Hectares, which includes a mix of forestry, farmland and the landscaped gardens. There are a good number of mature trees including two sentinel oak trees in front of the property. Everyone who visits comments on how peaceful it is here, whether it be the absence of road noise, the birdsong in the morning or the calm of nature itself that surrounds and nurtures the Ķipēni Estate.
Activities
Ķipēni Estate offers so much for the visitor, from swimming in a natural pond to long (or short!) walks around the parkland, farm and surrounding countryside.
If you prefer a more active break; there are cycle routes nearby, walks in the middle of nature and even working on the farm if that is your wish – something for everyone!
Perhaps you enjoy painting or photography? The landscapes offer so many scenes just waiting to be captured by a skilfully wielded paintbrush or lens. Nature, historic buildings from 250-150 years old and sunrises to hold you enthralled – they are waiting to be recorded by the skilled artist.

Staying at Ķipēni Estate
There are several options for those who wish to spend some time on the Estate, either for nearby work or for leisure. At the end of your day, stay in the comfort of top class accommodation at remarkably reasonable prices.
Muiza
During the warmer months, a second-floor apartment is available to enjoy in the Muiza. Stay in a sympathetically renovated apartment with living-room, bedroom, shower and kitchen area. Floors, walls and ceilings are all finished in traditional materials such as brick, clay and wood; in harmony with the Muiza herself.
Guesthouse
The Ķipēni Guesthouse is recently built and offers a modern and comfortable stay in the middle of the Ķipēni Estate. The views over Latvian hills, farmland and forest are stunning. The accommodation combines clean comfortable rooms, most with their own shower, with a modern shared kitchen and areas to unwind – all in a relaxed atmosphere.
Park4night
For those travellers of the road who move from place to place and sample different views every day or two, a stop at Ķipēni Estate is a welcome break. We offer areas of firm ground, access to fresh water, toilet and shower facilities; as well as views over the countryside when you go to sleep or wake up that will make the trip worthwhile!
A brief history of Ķipēnu muiža
The building that is currently standing as Ķipēnu Muiža is believed to have been built in the 1850’s by a German baron, although there are records of a Manor House being here for hundreds of years before that. A map from 1796 shows what must be an earlier version of Ķipēnu muiža in the Estate of ‘Eck’.
Some say that the house was built as a hunting lodge and others that it was a family home. There is a belief that the Baron was a military advisor and that the family wealth was connected to trains. There are stories of manacles in the cellars and buried treasure – similar to so many manor houses around Latvia! What is sure is that the building is a magnificent example of architecture from that age, being built from red brick, with crenelations and high ceilings on the ground floor.
Following a rather sad 90 years for the Muiza and its Estate, during which a variety of government and private ownership saw the house and Estate fall into disrepair, the current owners have been renovating and breathing new life back into the Muiza and surrounding Estate.
The Ķipēni Estate is increasingly open to all sorts of amazing opportunities for leisure, luxury and life. Do come and visit us for a short holiday, an activity-based break, or simply to enjoy the beautiful Latvian countryside that we are proud to look after.
The Estate
Ķipēni Estate consists of the buildings and around 15 hectares of land surrounding and close to the Muiza itself.
There is a traditional Klēts (grain barn) that was built some 250 years ago with ages-old techniques of joining timber with wooden trunnels, pegs and joints. The original wheel that was used to pull grain up to the second floor with a pully system is a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Ķipēni Estate manages around 10 hectares as a biological, permaculture farm. This is a holistic farming system that creates sustainable human habitats and food systems that mimic natural ecosystems. It emphasises working with nature through observation, incorporating elements that are seen in nature such as crop rotation and natural pest management rather than chemicals. We believe that systematic planting of different crop species in the same field over successive seasons improves soil health, reduces pests, and enhances biodiversity, aligning with permaculture's goal of creating self-sustaining ecosystems. We currently farm wheat; fruit, including apples, pears and blackcurrants; vegetables, including potatoes, onions, tomatoes, gherkins, paprika and herbs; chickens and bees; forestry, hay and natural meadow.
The kūts (animal barn) has been partially rebuilt and is now used as a safe home for our chickens (protection from foxes and hawks!) as well general storage.
The stālis (stable) is also around 150 years old and was originally used to stable the estate’s horses – at that time used both for farm labour and riding pleasure! The building is huge and may one day be brought back to life.
